Expert Groundworks and Construction in Newlyn

The company is registered and run from 14 The Strand, a few doors from the harbour. Newlyn is not a town we travel to for work. It is the town the work is planned and priced in.

Trusted Groundworks and Construction, Run from The Strand in Newlyn

Groundworks in Newlyn is shaped by a working harbour, a hill and the weather that comes across Mount's Bay at both of them.

This is one of the largest fishing ports in England, and the village behind it climbs hard. Granite terraces run up from the harbour and The Strand in tight rows, and the plots behind them are long, narrow and steep. That decides the method before anything else: the machine has to fit the gap it is given, the arisings usually leave the way they arrived, and the neighbouring wall is part of the job rather than next to it. Gwavas sits above, with Mousehole, Paul and Sheffield along and behind the coast, and Penzance begins where Newlyn ends.

The bay decides the rest. Salt in the air and rain driven straight off the water change what a concrete mix and a wall detail have to survive, which is why concrete in this position is specified against the exposure classes set out in BS 8500 rather than by habit. Cornwall Civils & Construction has spent its working life on this side of the bay, in a village whose art school made its name painting exactly this weather.

What we do here

Our Groundworks, Building and Drainage Services in Newlyn

Newlyn work is mostly domestic in scale and technical in nature: old granite stock, steep ground and very little room.

Groundworks

Excavation, foundations and setting out on terraced plots where access is the whole problem, including small plant and hand dig where nothing else will reach.

Concrete services

Foundations, slabs, formwork and steel fixing, specified for a position this exposed.

New builds and renovations

Extensions, renovations and structural work on granite stock, including propping and steels. Matt is a mason by trade, so the build is not handed on after the groundworks.

Drainage solutions

Foul and surface water runs, land drains and soakaways on sites where the fall is generous and the space is not.

Hard landscaping

Terraced gardens, steps, garden walls and Cornish hedging on plots that fall away steeply behind the house.

Retaining walls

Structures holding a level where a garden or a parking area has been cut into the hill above the harbour.

Recent work

Recent Groundworks and Construction Work Around Mount's Bay

Working from the harbour puts most of this bay within reach of the office door. Matt assisted on Jubilee Pool in Penzance, the 1930s art deco lido along the front, where marine grade concrete and rapid set concrete were used and the programme was cut around low tide windows.

Cornwall Civils have been working on a complex external works package for our project in St Ives. Their works have included an extensive concrete retaining wall, in-situ concrete stairs and an in-ground modular drainage system.

Cornwall Civils handled a tricky concrete shuttering, steel work, and pour for us on an emergency job. They stepped in at very short notice and worked through nights and weekends to get it done. The quality of their work was excellent, and their commitment was outstanding.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you cover Mousehole, Paul and Sheffield?+
Yes. Newlyn, Gwavas, Mousehole, Paul and Sheffield are the immediate working area, and Penzance is our next door neighbour, so the whole of that side of Mount's Bay is normal ground for us. If your address is up on the hill and the access is tight, say so on the first call so it can be looked at properly.
How quickly can you get to Newlyn?+
Newlyn is the town we work from. The company is registered and run from The Strand, so a Newlyn enquiry does not involve travelling to the job at all. Site visits are still booked around the working week and Matt carries them out himself. Genuine emergencies, storm damage or a structure that has become unsafe, are dealt with by phone rather than by form.
Do you take on groundworks and extensions on tight terraced sites in Newlyn?+
Yes, and it is a good deal of what the village generates. A narrow plot running back from a granite terrace means the plant has to suit the gap, material leaves the way it came in, and the party wall is often part of the works. All of that is settled at the survey, including propping where the structure needs it.
Who will actually be on site?+
The director. Matt prices the job, then runs it and operates the machine, with 23 years in construction behind him and no site manager sitting between you and the work. Specialist trades come from a partner network built over fifteen years and are named before they start.
