Expert Groundworks and Construction Projects Across West Cornwall

Reinforced concrete retaining walls, piled cliff structures, marine concrete on a Grade II listed lido and turnkey builds. Five projects, each written up with the engineering that went into it, so you can judge the work on the detail rather than on a photograph.

Projects Delivered to Architects' and Engineers' Detail in West Cornwall

Every groundworks and construction project on this page was delivered by Cornwall Civils & Construction under one contract, from the first cut in the ground to the finished structure.

Most were built to an architect's detail or under an external structural engineer's direction. The design belongs to the engineer; building it to that design, and standing behind it, belongs to us.

Client names and contract values are not published here. What is published is the engineering: the depth of the foundation, the thickness of the wall, the grade of the concrete and the constraint the site imposed. That is what a developer or a main contractor is actually assessing.

Flagship Projects: The St Ives Retaining Wall and Jubilee Pool, Penzance

St Ives retaining wall

The site was tight and stepped, so every timber shutter was handmade to fit its step and the wall runs single sided and double sided along its length. The architect redesigned the sloping stair wall mid job, and the cast in situ steps up to the new build followed the new detail. Self consistency grade concrete, pumped by SprayRend Concrete Pumping, over Blue Elvan hard rock packed out at base level.

Jubilee Pool, Penzance

Jubilee Pool is a Grade II listed art deco lido built in the 1930s and sitting directly on the seafront, which sets the whole method. Marine grade concrete and rapid set concrete were specified for a structure that takes salt water year round, and the working windows were dictated by the tide rather than by the programme.

Signature job

Signature Job: Vertu BMW Dealership Demolition, Exeter

A full main dealership taken down in Exeter: the glazed showroom, the mezzanine and the steel frame, dismantled by machine with a sorting grab and hydraulic shear, and hot cut at height, including night working. A job Matt ran on site from the intact building to a cleared apron.

Cornwall Civils handled a tricky concrete shuttering, steel work, and pour for us on an emergency job. They stepped in at very short notice and worked through nights and weekends to get it done. The quality of their work was excellent, and their commitment was outstanding.
